What was your inspiration for creating The Yes Bar?
My son and his sweet brown eyes. He would come home from school crying about all the treats he couldn’t eat because he was sensitive to gluten. I would cry with him in the kitchen, until one day I looked at him and said, hey buddy, life can be tough sometimes. And we can either cry about it or just make it better. So instead of thinking about all the things we can’t eat, how about we celebrate what we can? His eyes went wide and there was a glimmer. I pulled out all the healthy things I knew we could say YES to, and made what I thought would be yummy. Really yummy. And the YES bar was born.
What has been your biggest success or rewarding moment to date?
Umm, I kind of think that being on the Today show was a pretty big deal. I mean, wow, who knew that would ever happen?
What keeps you motivated in business, even on the tough days?
I take seriously that I am entrusted to feed people. Like, it really matters to me. I feel like you are all at my giant kitchen table and I want you to have the best snack ever. So that inspires me. Also, there are so many amazing food entrepreneurs out these days. It is a very exciting time to be part of this movement to reclaim our food system.
What are some of the biggest goals you have for your business?
To change how people snack. Enough said.
Who has been your biggest cheerleader during your entrepreneurial journey?
I have been blessed with lots of people the whole time that have come out of the woodwork to just cheer me on, and say YES, keep going!!! Those people have really helped me, because there are many times I have just wanted to quit, it can be so hard.
Do you wear multiple hats in your business? Which hat do you enjoy the most? The least?
I wear almost every hat. I hope this year to get some other people wearing some hats. Because my head is tired. ☺ My favorite part is connecting with people, and my least favorite is filling out forms.
What is the one other profession you can imagine yourself doing?
A family therapist.
What is your favorite quote?
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” -Max Planck, Nobel Prize-winning physicist
What do you picture when you think of the ideal vacation?
I have a dream of one day going around the world with my husband and kids. Really getting to know a lot of different cultures, all of us together. Also, I would love to do some sort of Outward Bound family trip. But right now, I would just love a hammock and a virgin pina colada!
What do you love most about having your own business?
I get to decide when to work. Although in reality I am almost always working. But if I need it to be at 3am, then so be it. I love that I imagine things, and then they come to be! Through blood, sweat, and tears, but still, they become a reality. And that is thrilling. I love the amazing people I get to meet on this journey. I hate and love how hard this is. This is HARD. And because it is my business I get to really allow myself the ups and downs. I can quit and cry for a day, and then get back on the horse when I am ready. And then ride hard for days on end. It is a thrilling journey and I have learned so much about myself. I feel that owning my own business has really shown me how incredibly strong I am, and also given me a real respect for how much I need others at the same time. And my kids get to see me struggle and rise up. And what better lesson could a Mom wish to show her kids? Because YES is not just a snack bar. It is also an attitude.
